Play today at Prestwick, which occupies a unique niche in golfing history. It was here in 1860 that the very first British Open was played with just a handful of participants. This links can produce some awkward stances on undulating fairways. Typical of the original golfing terrain, Prestwick provides a taste of golf as it was played long ago.
Play today at Western Gailes, rated by many visitors to Scotland as its finest ''unknown'', and perhaps its most enjoyable. The course relies on natural defenses created by the sand dunes and wind. A traditional links layout that plays in a loop with its toughest stretch along the banks of the dunes that generally plays into the prevailing wind. 
Play the Ailsa Course at the Westin Turnberry Resort. Lying on a spectacular curve of rockbound coast in the southern reaches of Ayrshire, the Ailsa Course has been host to the Open Championship on three previous occasions. MacKenzie Ross redesigned and molded the course on this exposed location ideally suited for an Open Championship. 
Today play Formby Golf Club. Founded in 1884, Formby is a magnificent traditional links course of charm and elegance situated close to the shoreline of the Irish Sea. The course lies within the sandhills and pinewoods of Formby. The club has a distinguished record of staging many major Amateur events including the British Amateur Championship on three occasions.
